Some time ago I started to follow Israeli artist Yael Cohen@yaco.art ) and soon I could not wait to see her next drawings and be in awe of how she can portrait a certain feeling within a position of two beings. I was very inspired by her work and asked the two dancers Giverny Welsch@insignifications ) and Rodrigo Alvarenga@drigo_alvarenga ) here in Montréal if they’d like to interpret her drawings in photography.

The day of the shoot I actually felt quite sick and removed from our efforts to do Yael’s work justice...and I dreaded to develop the film thinking it will not have worked out. The next day I remember feeling speechless about the results...I could see the drawing within the photograph and sometimes you have truely a chance to see a moment of magic.

Here are some words from Yael that I found really beautiful:

“Sometimes when I draw one dark figure and one light figure it is as if one of them is there/not there. So I can identify with one and the other is just what is going on in the mind of the figure. So they are intertwined but each in there own world.

I draw a lot of inspiration from compression and release. I like the juxtaposition they create and I work with this in my own movement.

There is also a weirdness I like to explore. When I draw these figures I tap into the intensity of what I feel sometimes in contact improvisation. And how I let myself explore with other humans in ways I would normally be to timid to do. And these caricatures live in that space.”
